Since alcohol addiction is one of the biggest addiction problems in the world, its become the focus of numerous studies into potential treatments and cures. If you are looking for an alcoholism treatment program, then there are several highly effective programs that’s been proven to work. Although none of them are “magic bullets” anyone who has become dependant on alcohol is twice as likely to succeed as breaking the addiction with the help of a program.

You will likely experience a whole host of mental effects that are a direct result of your body not having its usual access to the alcohol it craves. These can be hallucinations, anxiety, depression, and other things that affect your thinking processes and your ability to reason. In addition, you will likely have a number of suicidal thoughts that can be very difficult to control when you are getting alcoholism treatment. This is why it is so important to take the medications just as prescribed by your doctor. They are designed to help you and give you the best chance for success.

There are various approaches to counseling that teach alcoholics how to become aware of the emotional and situational hot buttons that trigger their drinking. Armed with this information, clients can then learn about different ways in which they can cope with their feelings and situations that do not include the use of alcohol. Not surprisingly, these types of alcoholism treatment therapies are typically offered on an outpatient basis.

Your counselor will work with you on an individual basis. This is designed so that you can have someone to talk to about all of the issues that you are facing as you work on your alcoholism treatment plan. You will also be exploring with your counselor the circumstances that lead to becoming addicted to alcohol. This will enable the two of you to brainstorm some ideas on how you can avoid turning to alcohol when you are faced with this type of situation in the future. This is another important tool that you need to be able to utilize so that you can achieve long term success with your alcoholism treatment plan.

If one does not want to admit oneself in a rehab center, and does not find the strength that is needed to quit alcoholism by themselves, then they can join a support group. A support group will do exactly what the name suggests. It is a group that you can lean on for support to come out of a problem. The most famous group of them all is the Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). These support groups have programs whereby men and women who suffer from alcohol abuse will come forth and discuss their problems and possible solutions. They will talk about their efforts and the difficulties that they faced. This helps others to get inspiration to quit or continue to remain sober. They have several programs designed. Like a 12 step approach which explains how to quit and never resume drinking again. For example – they have options like ‘call a friend’, whereby when one experiences the urge to drink, they can call this appointed ‘friend’ and he/she will be responsible to stop you from having any alcohol. It has been shown that people who join support groups in combination with other alcohol treatment options, have more success when it comes to quitting alcohol.

There are treatment centers which specialize in alcoholism treatment. However, it must be mentioned that they do not cure the alcoholic. There is no cure. However, they are great resources for anyone looking to stop drinking. Alcoholic treatment centers specialize in detoxification and teaching the basic skills need to maintain long-term sobriety. But it is up to the patient to continue those skills taught once they leave the treatment center.

The support role the family becomes equipped to play in recovery proves to be most important when relapse occurs. In many cases of alcoholism, it takes several relapses before an alcoholic is finally able to remain sober for a long period of time. No matter, it is important to always remember that alcoholism is a disease and it takes a lifetime of work as there is no easy cure. The key to recovery is to stay dedicated, dilligent, and patient.

Tennis elbow could also be referred to as the archers’ elbow or perhaps shooters’ elbow and in fact is a problem where the outer part of the elbow gets sensitive and painful. The affliction is often caused by participating in tennis and recreation relating to racquets, though almost any individual may possibly be in pain from the ailment. It is largely an overuse condition which is often prevalent in the extensor tendon which actually commences at the lateral epicondyle, and is essentially caused in response to over exertion. Tennis enthusiasts who usually utilized the exact same frequent motion for several years lived with tennis elbow. Thousands upon thousands of afflicted people search for a cure for the condition daily.

Symptoms

Tennis elbow is usually associated with a pain on the outside of the elbow, this pain may be asymptomatic and is usually worsened when the patient attempts to lift weights, or attempts to grip objects or engage the wrist muscles. In chronic cases, the patient experiences pain and sometimes a burning sensation when he carries out even simplest tasks like lifting a mug of coffee. When she first came in we chit chatted for a few minutes and she was telling me with a great deal of pride how their house renovation was going and about how relieved she was that she had finally finished painting “every single room in the house”. But now she was getting really frustrated because she had so much left to do but this elbow, arm, hand, etc. pain thing was getting in the way and she was really worried that it was something really serious and even permanent.

Treatment

Another thing to remember is that more than 95 percent of such injuries can usually be treated successfully without a surgeon. The treatments vary. First of all you need to identify the root cause, almost always an activity of vigorous or repetitive nature that causes the tennis elbow to occur in the first place. When the cause is not identified properly and is repeated even after successful treatment, the problem usually resumes. Known treatments range from natural methods to the use of injections. However if the remedy isn’t done with good results, the chances of further suffering rise which usually increases the likelihood of surgery being performed.

Conventional medicine commonly uses steroid or cortisone injections when treating tennis elbow symptoms. Let’s not go into detail here on treating this ailment using injections, other than to say that conventional medicine has achieved inconsistent results administering such treatments. Furthermore, conventional medicine has yet to establish a standard dose for treatment which is quite astounding seeing as it is the primary treatment suggested by doctors in treating this injury. If you have already been on such a treatment without success, there are alternative treatments we can focus on here.

Those that suffered a rise of tennis elbow discomfort have been known to be prone to the problem when associated with a repetitive activity for a longer time frame which indicates (that) performance in addition to experience can often be deciding reasons. Bad technique is one reason responsible for increasing the prospects of sprain. The person will need to therefore learn the right type of ways of actively playing the sport. An individual’s amount of expertise also is a decisive component which can affect the prevalence of the affliction. Some practices which, determined by general practitioners, can possibly put an end to a tennis elbow: Reduce the duration of playing time any time you sense pain and discomfort at the outside portion of the elbow or if you’re already injured, and you should have a general good fitness level.

Most sporting activities could very well put the participator in jeopardy from personal injury, whether or not it be contact or non contact sports. Exercise typically places pressure on your physique and undoubtedly what ever sport or activity you might be engaged in has with it, it is own specific risk areas, the athletes, footballers tennis players and most non contact sports activities, clearly place your feet at a greater risk grade than a snooker or billiards player. Irrespective of what kind of sports activity you take pleasure in, the liabilities are there and they’re real. Sportsmen and ladies need to look after their physiques and ought to also know what to do and who to communicate with, should any accidents occur.

One of the oldest but also often the most neglected ways of avoiding sports injuries is to perform warm-up and cool down exercises before and after any game. Warm ups serve their purpose by preparing both your body and your mind for the activity. Warm ups are called such because they literally warm up the muscles you are going to be using for the game. Aside from warming the muscles, pre-game exercises also increase your heart rate and prepare your mind for the activity. Because you have been fully limbered up, you are far less likely to pull a muscle or suffer an injury. A ten-minute warm up that targets the muscles you will use most during the game should suffice.

Another very helpful key in preventing sports injury is learning when to ice and take an ice bath. Leading Sports Injury Doctor Beverly Hills have studied that lactic acid builds up in the muscle when works out. Lactic acid plays a major role in sports injury the fastest way to get rid of lactic acid is by bathing in ice. Applying ice packs does not work the same as bathing in ice. Bathing in ice submerges the entire muscle and allows it to constrict more an flushes the lactic acid more rapidly.

Before you ice your injury you should look into the different choices to ice with, there is a wide variety. Try to bring out your creative side a little to find something to ice with. There is the simple ice cubes in a bag style, although it can not work as well as other choices, the bag usually has sharp edges and doesn’t do well well keeping the injured area cold. Another good, popular choice is the the frozen peas in a bag. The pea style is much more effective, and will help you our more than ice cubes in a bag. You never want the swelling to grow on you so be sure to ice all the area the injury is around. If you are playing a game and feel an injury be sure to get out as soon as possible and start to rest. The more soon you begin your healing, the sooner you will get back playing. A lot of people do not understand how important it is to heal, patience is key. Getting back into the swing of things to early could put you right back on the bench with another injury.

Often times injuries are caused when muscles are too sore to perform at their peak and individuals push the limits. Golfers often wake up with sore shoulders, and still attend their golf competitions and in some cases these golfers may suffer from shoulder pain or shoulder injury and require Reverse Shoulder Surgery although the surgery may be the only way to restore function and provide pain relief a simple ice bath would have been better to have to do neither of the two.

Choosing the right best rehab treatment center is a very important decision. It can make the difference between someone being successful in recovery since most drug rehab centers are good. The question becomes how do you know if it is the right treatment rehab for the person. Then, picking the right best rehab is too important, not to mention expensive, a decision to just choose a rehab for any one reason. There are many of 30 day rehab treatment centers around the country. It can be difficult to decide which is the best treatment program for someone who needs rehab. There is no known rating system for ranking the best rehab programs in the United States, and then the reason may be because there are so many different types of alcohol and drug rehab treatment centers.

Alcoholism and drug addiction are life threatening and potentially fatal, problems, so, choosing the best rehab, treatment center can be a matter of life or death. Deciding what drug rehab or alcohol treatment center is the best one for someone can be a very hard procedure. The most successful facilities offer individualized counseling and activities. They have a better qualified staff, offer a more holistic approach, and provide more one on one therapy and understand that alcoholism and addiction are brain diseases which must be treated in a multidimensional fashion. Some drug rehab programs are more successful treating specific issues and problems, such as, Malibu Horizon. It is more renowned than other drug and alcohol rehab centers for treating co-occurring (dual diagnosis).

Many experts usually agree that 30 days is not enough time to adequately prepare a drug addict and or an alcoholic for successful recovery. Some treatment centers offer both 30-day programs and an extended care program, of 90 days. For someone who has been to a 30-day program before and relapsed, an extended program may be necessary. Besides, the vast majority of drug rehab treatment centers are based around the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. However, for some people, this type of format is not appropriate. If someone is a confirmed atheist or agnostic, then a12 step format might be a real deterrent, so the best, non 12 step program is Malibu Horizon.

Then, the vast majority of these are Christian. For example, for someone who is a devote Christian; this might be a very good choice. If they have other serious problems, such as psychiatric disorders or an eating disorder, along with their substance alcohol abuse, this might not be the best rehab choice. As the name indicates, wilderness programs are located in the “woods” and generally cater to adolescents (under 18). They will teach self confidence and self reliance and promote a connection to and with nature. For those concerned about fraternization and possible distractions of the opposite sex while in drug rehab, gender specific programs are also designed to cater to males or females only.

Additionally, if a person has a history of sexual compulsivity, then a gender specific program would be recommended. There are also several forms of Eating Disorders (ED) all of which complicate and often preclude a person from attending a standard drug rehab that does not have a specific program to treat Eating Disorders. Here people with an active Eating Disorder should only attend a treatment center with a specific ED program.

A joint is an area of the body where two different bones meet. A joint functions to move the body parts connected by its bones. Arthritis literally means inflammation of one or more joints. Arthritis is frequently accompanied by joint pain. Joint pain is referred to as arthralgia.

Basically, a joint is where one bone moves on another bone. Ligaments hold the two bones together. The ligaments are like elastic bands, while they keep the bones in place your muscles relax or contract to make the joint move. Cartilage covers the bone surface to stop the two bones from rubbing directly against each other. The covering of cartilage allows the joint to work smoothly and painlessly. A capsule surrounds the joint. The space within the joint – the joint cavity – has synovial fluid. Synovial fluid nourishes the joint and the cartilage. The synovial fluid is produced by the synovium (synovial membrane) which lines the joint cavity. If you have arthritis something goes wrong with the joint(s). What goes wrong depends on what type of arthritis you have. It could be that the cartilage is wearing away, a lack of fluid, autoimmunity (your body attacking itself), infection, or a combination of many factors.

Cause

The causes of arthritis depend on the form of arthritis. Causes include injury (leading to degenerative arthritis), abnormal metabolism (such as gout and pseudogout), inheritance (such as in osteoarthritis), infections (such as in the arthritis of Lyme disease), and an overactive immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus). Treatment programs, when possible, are often directed toward the precise cause of the arthritis.

Symptoms

Symptoms of arthritis include pain and limited function of joints. Inflammation of the joints from arthritis is characterized by joint stiffness, swelling, redness, and warmth. Tenderness of the inflamed joint can be present. Many of the forms of arthritis, because they are rheumatic diseases, can cause symptoms affecting various organs of the body that do not directly involve the joints. Therefore, symptoms in some patients with certain forms of arthritis can also include fever, gland swelling (swollen lymph nodes), weight loss, fatigue, feeling unwell, and even symptoms from abnormalities of organs such as the lungs, heart, or kidneys.

Types of arthritis

There are over 100 types of arthritis. Here is a description of some common ones, together with the causes:

Osteoarthritis – cartilage loses its elasticity. If the cartilage is stiff it becomes damaged more easily. The cartilage, which acts as a shock absorber, will gradually wear away in some areas. As the cartilage becomes damaged tendons and ligaments become stretched, causing pain. Eventually the bones may rub against each other causing very severe pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis – this is an inflammatory form of arthritis. The synovial membrane (synovium) is attacked, resulting in swelling and pain. If left untreated the arthritis can lead to deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis is significantly more common in women than men and generally strikes when the patient is aged between 40 and 60. However, children and much older people may also be affected.

The treatment of arthritis depends on which particular form of arthritis is present, its location, severity, persistence, and any underlying background medical conditions of the patient. Each treatment program must be customized for the individual patient. Treatment programs can incorporate home remedies, nonprescription and prescription medications, joint injections, and surgical operations. Some treatment programs involve weight reduction and avoiding activities that exert excessive stress on the joint. The goal of treatment of arthritis is to reduce joint pain and inflammation while preventing damage and improving and maintaining joint function.

Nearly one-fourth of all the bones in your body are in your feet, which provide you with both support and movement. A broken (fractured) bone in your forefoot (metatarsals) or in one of your toes (phalanges) is often painful but rarely disabling. Most of the time, these injuries heal without operative treatment. Fractures of the toe are one of the most common lower extremity fractures diagnosed by family physicians. Toe fractures most frequently are caused by a crushing injury or axial force such as stubbing a toe. Joint hyperextension and stress fractures are less common. Most patients have point tenderness at the fracture site or pain with gentle axial loading of the digit. Anteroposterior and oblique radiographs generally are most useful for identifying fractures, determining displacement, and evaluating adjacent phalanges and digits. Referral is indicated in patients with circulatory compromise, open fractures, significant soft tissue injury, fracture-dislocations, displaced intra-articular fractures, or fractures of the first toe that are unstable or involve more than 25 percent of the joint surface.

Symptoms

Pain, swelling, and sometimes bruising are the most common signs of a fracture in the foot. If you have a broken toe, you may be able to walk, but this usually aggravates the pain. If the pain, swelling, and discoloration continue for more than two or three days, or if pain interferes with walking, something could be seriously wrong; see a doctor as soon as possible. If you delay getting treatment, you could develop persistent foot pain and arthritis. You could also change the way you walk (your gait), which could lead to the formation of painful calluses on the bottom of your foot or other injuries.

Test

A doctor will ask questions to determine how the toe was injured and will examine the injured toe and possibly check for other injuries. It is best to seek medical evaluation soon after the injury to ensure proper treatment and healing. A doctor may take an x-ray to see if a toe is broken. X-ray are not always necessary to make the diagnosis of a broken toe, especially if the break is in one of the smaller toes.

Treatment

Your treatment will depend on which toe is broken and the type of fracture you have. You may need to do one or more of the following to treat your fractured toe:

Buddy taping: Your caregiver will put a small bandage between the fractured toe and the toe next to it. Then the caregiver will tape both toes together with adhesive tape. This helps to support and prevent movement of your broken toe so that it can heal. Wear wide shoes with stiff soles. These will also help to prevent movement and protect your toe.

Special shoe: Your caregiver may give you a special shoe or walking cast to wear. This will limit movement and protect your toe so it can heal. This shoe may also make it easier for you to walk.

Ice, elevate, and rest: Put crushed ice in a plastic bag or use a bag of frozen peas or corn. Cover it with a towel. Place this on your toe for 15 to 20 minutes every hour as long as you need it. Lift your foot above the level of your heart and rest it on pillows while sitting or lying down. This will help decrease the swelling and pain of the toe. Rest your toe and do not exercise with that foot until your toe is healed.

Complications

A common complication of toe fractures is persistent pain and a decreased tolerance for activity. Pain that persists longer than a few months may indicate malunion, which may limit a patient’s future activities significantly. Toe fractures, especially intra-articular fractures, can result in degenerative joint disease, and osteomyelitis is a potential complication of open fractures.

Glaucoma is a serious eye condition characterised by an increase of pressure within the eye ball, called intraocular pressure. It is similar to high blood pressure in the body. The condition is therefore, also known as hypertension of the eye. A certain amount of intraocular pressure is considered necessary, but too much can cause damage to the eye and may result in vision loss. Glaucoma is the major cause of blindness among adults today. One out of every eight blind persons is a victim of glaucoma. Far sighted persons are more prone to develop this disease than near sighted ones.

Glaucoma has really tiny noticeable symptoms or signs until finally it has arrived at an advanced stage and vision reduction alerts you to its presence. In reality, glaucoma is the second leading trigger of blindness. Even so, progression of glaucoma can be prevented with early therapy, which is why it is so important to schedule regular eye exams.

Chronic glaucoma is more common in Western countries than acute glaucoma, but is easier to treat. This form of glaucoma causes no pain, and your eyesight seems normal, despite the damage being done to your optic nerve. Many people who have had chronic glaucoma for a long time before diagnosis complain of one eye’s vision being worse than the others, or a loss of field vision in the shape of an arc above or below the centre of their vision. If left untreated, it can result in “tunnel-vision”, and in time, this too is lost. It is more common in people over the age of 40, and it affects 5% of the population over the age of 65. People of African origin are said to be more prone to glaucoma, as well as those with a high degree of short sightedness. Treatment includes eye drops (to reduce the amount of aqueous you produce, and to unblock the drainage tunnels) and laser surgery, to improve drainage.

Visual field testing by using welch allyn ophthalmoscope is most frequently used to detect any signs of glaucoma damage to the optic nerve. In addition, visual field tests are useful for detection of central or peripheral retinal disease, eyelid conditions such as ptosis or drooping, optic nerve disease, and diseases affecting the visual pathways within the brain.

The modern medical treatment for glaucoma is through surgery which relieves the internal pressure in the eye due to excess fluid. This, however, does not remove the cause of the presence of the excess fluid. Consequently, even after the operation, there is no guarantee whatsoever that the trouble will not recur, or that it will not affect the other eye. The natural treatment for glaucoma is same as that for any other condition associated with high toxicity and is directed towards preserving whatever sight remains. If treated in the early stages, the results are encouraging. Though cases of advanced glaucoma may be beyond a cure, even so certain nutritional and other biological approaches can prove effective in controlling the condition and preserving the remaining sight. Certain foodstuff should be scrupulously avoided by patients suffering from glaucoma.

New techniques in minimally invasive surgery are allowing doctors to treat problems with less disruption to a patient’s life. Among these innovations is the ability to treat some hip problems with arthroscopic surgery. In this procedure, the hip is seen through a camera inserted through a small incision. Other tiny incisions are used to place small instruments inside the hip to perform the procedure. The word “arthroscopy” comes from two Greek words: ‘arthro,’ meaning “joint,” and ‘scope,’ meaning “look.” Simply put, arthroscopic surgery is a means to look inside a joint. But arthroscopy is much more than that.

Knee and shoulder arthroscopy are by far the most common arthroscopic procedures performed. These joints are large enough to manipulate the instruments around, and they are amenable to arthroscopic surgery treatments. Technically speaking, any joint can be arthroscoped. However, the practicality and the instrumentation available limit our ability to arthroscope every joint for all types of problems. The most common arthroscopic procedures include repairing cartilage and meniscus problems in the knee, and repairing rotator cuff tears in the shoulder.

Arthritis of the hip causes a gradual loss of this cartilage; in its early phases, it triggers a vicious cycle. The arthritis changes the chemical make-up in the joint fluid, which leads to irritation of the lining and fraying of the joint. This reaction, in turn, causes more inflammation and more fraying. The hip pain associated with this condition is unique among joint pain problems in that it can keep one from sleeping through the night: hip pain from rolling over can jolt a person from a deep sleep.

The most concerning complications of hip arthroscopy have to do with several important nerves and blood vessels that surround the joint. Nerve injury is uncommon, but can be a significant problem. The most commonly affected nerves include the sciatic nerve, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (sensation to the thigh), and the pudendal nerve. Injury to any of the nerves can cause pain and other problems.

Other possible complications from hip arthroscopy include potential injury to normal structures, infection, and continued pain after the surgery. The rate of these complications is low, but patients need to understand the potential prior to undergoing a hip arthroscopy.

Understand that arthroscopic surgery is a surgical procedure and involves risks. These may include infection, blood clots, problems with anesthesia, etc. These are serious risks and the decision to undergo arthroscopic surgery should be taken seriously. That said, arthroscopic surgery is a “less invasive” procedure, and when performed for the right problem it is often very successful. Ask your doctor for more information about arthroscopic surgery, and talk about the possible risks of undergoing the procedure.
